Student Guide
Welcome to Bogmire University.
This guide explains how your student account works, how to customize your profile, how to connect with other students, and how to discover the various rewards and secrets hidden throughout Bogmire.
You do not need to learn everything at once. Most features are designed to be discovered naturally as you explore.
Your Student Profile
Every student has a public profile where other members of the Bogmire community can see information about them.
Your personal profile address is:
bogmire.com/@username
For example, if your username is mothman42, your profile would be:
bogmire.com/@mothman42
This is the link you should use if you want to share your profile with someone.
Your profile may display things such as your avatar, Major, Minor, Title, Incantus, achievements, badges, collection items, friends, and recent activity.
Some information is only displayed when applicable.
Editing Your Profile
When viewing your own profile, use the Edit Profile option to change information that is available for editing.
Depending on the section, you may be able to update things such as:
- your profile and cover images
- social media links
- your Major or Minor
- your Title
- other public profile information
Your first and last name and other account-related information are managed separately through your account settings.
Not every piece of information on your profile can be changed freely. Some titles, rewards, and other items must be earned or unlocked.
Your Avatar
Your avatar represents you throughout Bogmire.
When you first enroll, Bogmire creates a starting avatar based partly on the information you provided during enrollment. Afterward, you can customize it using the Avatar Editor.
The editor contains different categories such as body type, clothing, hair, eyes, glasses, hats, neckwear, accessories, and other features.
Some options are available immediately. Others may need to be unlocked.
If you change your avatar, be sure to save your changes before leaving the editor.
Locked Avatar Items
You may occasionally see avatar items that you cannot use yet.
These are rewards that can be unlocked through activities elsewhere on the site.
Possible unlocks may come from things such as completing activities, discovering hidden interactions, participating in special events, earning achievements, or receiving other Bogmire rewards.
If an item is locked, that simply means there is something left to discover.
Majors and Minors
Your Major and Minor represent your areas of study at Bogmire.
You selected these when you enrolled, and they appear on your student profile.
Your Major and Minor cannot be the same.
Some activities or rewards may eventually relate to particular areas of study.
Titles
Titles appear on your profile and are another way of showing your progress, accomplishments, or status within Bogmire.
Some titles may be available normally, while others are earned through special achievements, participation, events, or other accomplishments.
If you unlock a new Title, you may be able to choose which unlocked Title you want displayed.
Incantus
Your Incantus is your chosen magical catalyst – an item with which you hold an emotinal connection.
Examples may include things such as a wand, staff, ring, dagger, umbrella, broom, wooden spoon, or other unusual magical objects.
Your Incantus appears on your profile when one has been assigned.
Friends
You can become friends with other members of Bogmire.
When viewing another student’s profile, you can send them a friend request. Once they accept, you will appear in each other’s friends list.
Some official Bogmire characters also have profiles and may appear throughout the community just like other members.
Your friends list is part of your public Bogmire profile.
Activity
Your profile includes an activity feed showing certain things you have done around Bogmire.
Activity can help make profiles feel alive and gives other students a glimpse at what members of the community have been doing.
Not every action you take on the site necessarily appears in the activity feed.
Badges
Badges are visual awards displayed on your profile.
They may commemorate accomplishments, events, participation, discoveries, or other milestones.
Some badges are widely available. Others may only be obtainable during a particular event or by completing something unusual.
Your Collection
Your Collection contains special objects you have acquired throughout Bogmire.
Unlike ordinary achievements, Collection Items are meant to feel like actual artifacts, souvenirs, tokens, documents, or objects from the Bogmire world.
You will only see Collection Items that you have actually unlocked.
If your collection is empty, that does not necessarily mean there is nothing available. You simply have not found anything yet.
Rewards
The word reward is used throughout Bogmire as a general term for something you can unlock.
A reward might be:
- a badge
- a Collection Item
- a Title
- a new avatar item
- a new avatar color or customization option
- another special account feature
Some rewards are given automatically. Others require you to claim them. And some are hidden.
Hidden Activities and Secrets
Not everything on Bogmire announces itself.
There are hidden interactions, puzzles, clickable objects, and other secrets scattered throughout the site.
Sometimes clicking something unusual may do nothing.
Sometimes it may do considerably more.
There may also be activities that require you to complete several steps before anything happens.
Exploration is encouraged.
Enrollment Rewards
New students may receive rewards simply for completing enrollment.
When these are available, you may be given an opportunity to claim them after your enrollment is complete.
These items serve as a record of your arrival at Bogmire and may include things that are not obtainable in exactly the same way later.
Your Username
Your username identifies your account and is also used in your public profile address.
For example:
@yourusername
Because the username is tied to your identity throughout the community, choose it carefully during enrollment.
Your username is different from your display name. Other members will generally see your name on your profile, while your username provides a unique way to identify and link to your account.
Privacy and Enrollment Information
Some information requested during enrollment is used to help establish your account and create your initial Bogmire experience.
Optional demographic information provided during enrollment is not intended to become part of your public profile.
Your public profile only displays information meant to be shared with the Bogmire community.
Social Media Links
You can optionally add links to your social media accounts from your profile.
These are completely optional.
Only add accounts you are comfortable sharing publicly, since anyone who can view your profile may be able to follow those links.
Account Settings
Your account settings are separate from your public profile.
This is where account-level information and options are managed rather than the fictional student information shown on your profile.
If you need to change something related to your actual account rather than your Bogmire profile, check your account settings first.
Passwords
If you forget your password, use the Forgot Password option on the login page.
A password reset link will be sent to the email address associated with your account.
For security reasons, Bogmire staff will never ask you to send your password to them.
Why Can’t I See a Reward Someone Else Has?
Many rewards are only displayed once they have been unlocked.
This is especially true of Collection Items and certain other discoveries.
If another student has something on their profile that you do not have, it may come from an activity you have not completed yet, a secret you have not found, an event you did not participate in, or another form of reward.
You are not necessarily supposed to know where everything comes from.
Can I Unlock Everything?
Not necessarily.
Some rewards may be tied to limited events, accomplishments, special activities, or other circumstances.
Bogmire is intended to grow over time, so new things may also become available in the future.
Do I Need to Know the Otherworld Saga?
No.
Existing characters, locations, organizations, and lore from the Otherworld Saga may appear throughout Bogmire, but prior knowledge is not required.
If you already know the stories, you may recognize references that other students do not.
If you are completely new, you can simply experience Bogmire as its own world.
Are the Character Profiles Real People?
Some profiles belong to fictional characters from the Bogmire and Otherworld setting.
They exist to make the university feel like a living place and may appear as students, faculty, staff, or other members of the community.
These characters may have friends, activity, biographies, titles, and other profile information just like student accounts.
What Should I Do First?
After completing enrollment, a good place to begin is:
- Visit your profile and make sure everything looks the way you want.
- Customize your avatar.
- Look through your available rewards.
- Explore other student and character profiles.
- Add a few friends.
- Start exploring the site.
And pay attention.
Bogmire has a habit of hiding things in places where sensible universities would not.
